Not everyone values privacy

  • but all of us value it in some way
    • protection from bad people; identity theft, etc.
  • Sometimes privacy lets us present two faces (like batman and bruce wayne)
  • Avoiding discrinination (info could be used to discriminate against us)

Value thoery = what’s good for people (are there objective answers for everyone)

  • “different kinds of good”
    • Instrumental goods (valuable b/c it helps produce something good)
    • Intrinsic goods / valuable in themselves
    • I recon this is similar to extrinsic / intrinsic motivation I recon privacy is an instrumental good
  • helps to avoid harm (intrinsic)
  • people r saying it’s intrinsic and i am not seeing it

Decentralized = things happen on device unless the server is absolutely necessary

If we did a vote to see if we use the privacy first app or public health first app, the people who wanted privacy wouldn’t download the app if we went with the health first app

A good “justification” to reason w/ someone who chose the other option should be something that acknowledges what they want and explains why the other option was chosen
